The Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering has established one of the most active international education programs at ISU.
Biological Materials and Processes (BioMaP): Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) (National Science Foundation)

A summer study program is available to juniors and qualified sophomores. The five-week program offers the opportunity to complete a lecture and laboratory course at the University of Oviedo (Spain) and to compare the technical and cultural aspects of the US and Spain.
By participating in this program, students earn semester credits in ChE 391 and 392. The program is typically advertised in September, an explanatory meeting held in October, and application deadline in November.
Participants are responsible for making their own round-trip travel arrangements.
Students have generally attended classes for one or two semesters, perhaps with a travel period coordinated with university schedules.
Coursework is sufficiently similar at these universities to enable students to continue their degree programs without interruption upon return to ISU.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was established in 1991 with the primary function of providing facilities for tertiary education and research in various branches of engineering and technology.
The main campus of NTU occupies a beautiful 200-acre site in the southwestern part of Singapore, about 25 km from the city center. The campus buildings are laid out on a master plan drawn up by world famous architect Kenzo Tange. Members of the University community study and work in state-of-the-art and well-equipped laboratories, lecture theatres and tutorial rooms.
The National University of Singapore consists of nearly 23,000 students studying in the disciplines of engineering, science, business administration, architecture and building, arts and social sciences, dentistry, law, and medicine.
NUS has been recognized as one of the premier universities in southeast Asia. Excellent laboratory, equipment, and library facilities are to be found on this spectacular urban campus in modern Singapore. All classroom instruction is in English.
An exchange program for chemical engineering juniors has been established with the Chemical Engineering and Biochemical Engineering Departments of University College London.
This program provides for up to three students each year to complete their junior year at University College and three students from University College to attend Iowa State.
Full academic year is required because of the British system of courses and exams. Students participating enroll and pay fees to their home institution. The principal additional cost is transportation to London.
During the 2002-2003 academic year, Amy Radermacher (ISU) and Tristan Pritchard-Meeker (UCL) participated in the exchange.
This exchange program with two institutions in Lausanne, Switzerland has been operating since 1984. It is for stays of one semester (March to late June) or two semesters (late October to late June).
Virtually all instruction is in French.
The EPFL has a world-class chemical engineering program and most other engineering and science curricula, while UNIL offers a full line of science, humanities, and business courses. EPFL offers scholarships of 4,500 Swiss francs ($4,000 at the present exchange rate) to ISU students who study there on the program.
The University of Limerick campus, located on the banks of the River Shannon, lies at the heart of the 600-acre National Technological Park, three miles outside the city of Limerick. The university currently houses a population of 9,000 students. A key feature of academic life at the university is the Cooperative Education program – undergraduate placement involving cooperation between the university, employers and students.
