Daniel C. Coy (BSChE’86, PhDChE’93) was awarded the Professional Progress in Engineering Award at the 2004 Marston Club banquet this spring. Established in 1989, the PPEA recognizes outstanding professional progress and personal development in a field of engineering specialization and distinguished community service by alums under the age of 46 and is the college’s highest honor for young alumni.

Currently director of engineering at Nanophase Technologies Corporation in Romeoville, Illinois, Coy manages the engineering and technical aspects of producing novel nanomaterials. Since joining Nanophase in 1999, he has developed a patent-pending separator for clarification of nanocrystalline materials, directed the design and construction of a new advanced manufacturing facility for nanocrystalline materials, and developed a highly automated process for aqueous dispersions of nanomaterials.

As a graduate student at ISU, Coy created visual geometric models that today serve as the basis for Gibbsian thermodynamics. He spent six years with the Nalco Chemical Company, where he championed a computational fluid dynamics initiative that led to applications benefiting Nalco and had a tremendous impact on industrial mixing problems. He is a past recipient of an R&D 100 Award and was recently elected vice-chair of the AIChE Nanoscale Science and Engineering Forum programming group.
