Research Interests
The research interests of our group include:   heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis; natural product recovery and biorenewable resource processing, and thin film materials for sensors and catalysts. Studies of catalytic kinetics, reaction pathways, and molecular mechanisms are a key part of our work. Production of chemical intermediates and value-added products by clean catalytic processing is also an important environmental motivation. An array of catalyst characterization techniques--including several in situ approaches--are being employed (laser Raman spectroscopy FT-IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and adsorption/ chemisorption characterization). Our research on bioprocessing includes metathesis of olefins derived from soy oil processing and catalytic conversion of carotenoids. We are interested in the use of laser Raman spectroscopy to facilitate maize metabolomics and nutrient extraction. In our materials research, we are using combinatorial chemistry approaches to prepare thin film materials for sensors and nano-structured catalysts.
